Landing page budget: the full cost, beyond creation

Published on 29 July 2026 · 9 min read

When people ask "how much does a landing page cost?", they almost always mean the creation cost — the one detailed in our guide to landing page pricing. But a page produces nothing on its own: it needs a domain, hosting, tools to capture and track conversions, often paid traffic, and iterations to improve it. Underestimating these items isn't an individual lapse of attention: it's a documented bias. Roger Buehler, Dale Griffin, and Michael Ross showed in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that we systematically underestimate the time and resources of our own projects, even after living through comparable overruns — the planning fallacy (Buehler, Griffin & Ross, 1994). The remedy they suggest applies to a landing page budget: reason through exhaustive line items rather than an overall impression. Here's the list.

Item 1 — Creation: €0 to €10,000

It's the most visible and most variable item: a self-installed template (under €100), a freelancer (€500 to €3,000), an agency (€2,000 to €10,000 and beyond). The trade-off between these options — and what each price level actually includes — is covered in our template vs custom comparison. Above all, remember this is the only one-shot item in the budget: all the following ones are recurring.

Item 2 — Domain and hosting: €10 to €300/year

A .com or .fr domain costs €10 to €20 a year. On the hosting side, a modern static landing page (exported Next.js, for example) fits within Vercel's or Netlify's free tier for reasonable traffic; decent WordPress hosting runs more like €5 to €30 a month, theme and plugins not included — a structural gap covered in our Next.js vs WordPress comparison.

Item 3 — Tools: €0 to €150/month

A set of tools orbits the page — some essential, some comfort:

  • Essential and free: measurement — GA4 and Search Console, configured properly from day one.
  • Near-essential: the email tool if the page captures emails (€0 to €30/month at first) and GDPR consent management (free solutions exist).
  • Comfort: heatmaps and session recordings (free tiers are enough at first), chat, dedicated A/B testing — pointless until traffic justifies it, as our article on optimizing without traffic explains.

Item 4 — Traffic: often the biggest real item

A landing page without visitors is a billboard in the desert. If traffic comes from advertising — Google Ads, Meta Ads, or LinkedIn — this item usually exceeds the creation cost within the first few months: as an order of magnitude, a serious test budget starts around €500 to €1,000 a month, and cost per click varies enormously by industry. The organic alternative (SEO, social, email) costs less in cash but more in time — and landing page SEO has rules of its own. Budgeting the page without budgeting its traffic is the most expensive mistake on this list.

Item 5 — Maintenance and iterations: 5 to 15% per year, plus your time

Technical updates, fixes, small evolutions: our dedicated article on maintenance costs prices this item by stack — near zero for a static page, recurring for a CMS. Add the item nobody budgets: iterations. A landing page almost never converts optimally in its first version; plan time (or service days) to analyze, reword, and retest during the first three to six months.

Three typical budgets, first year

Orders of magnitude for three common scenarios, excluding the time cost of organic traffic
ItemBootstrap (template)Freelancer + moderate adsAgency + sustained ads
Creation€89 to €229€1,000 to €3,000€4,000 to €10,000
Domain + hosting€10 to €20/yr€50 to €150/yr€100 to €300/yr
Tools€0 to €20/mo€20 to €60/mo€60 to €150/mo
Advertising€0 (organic)€300 to €1,000/mo€1,500/mo and up
Maintenance + iterationsyour time€300 to €800/yrincluded or €1,000/yr and up
Year 1 total (order of magnitude)≈ €100 to €500≈ €5,000 to €16,000≈ €25,000 and up

These ranges aren't quotes: they're there to check that no item was forgotten and that the ratio between them is healthy. A €5,000 creation with €0 of traffic budget is an unbalanced budget; the reverse — a sloppy page under a big ad budget — wastes every paid click, as our article on Quality Score points out.

That's precisely the equation our LanderKit templates (€89 each, €229 for the pack of 10) aim to optimize: shrink the creation item to the minimum without sacrificing conversion structure, so the budget flows toward what actually makes the difference — traffic and iterations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What total budget should you plan for a first landing page?

With a template and organic traffic, a few hundred euros in the first year is enough. With advertising, traffic quickly becomes the biggest item: plan €500 to €1,000 a month of test budget on top of creation. The key is budgeting the page and its traffic together, never one without the other.

Why do landing page budgets get overrun so often?

Partly because of a documented bias, the planning fallacy: we systematically underestimate the costs of our own projects, even with experience. The remedy is budgeting line by line (creation, domain, hosting, tools, traffic, maintenance, iterations) rather than by feel.

Is the advertising budget part of the landing page budget?

Functionally, yes: a campaign landing page without traffic produces nothing. The two budgets are sized together — a highly polished page with €0 of traffic and a sloppy page with a big ad budget are two ways of wasting the same money.

Which items can you cut at launch?

The comfort tools: chat, dedicated A/B testing, paid heatmaps. Below a few thousand monthly visitors, they add almost nothing. Conversely, never cut measurement (GA4, Search Console): without it, you can't tell whether the rest of the budget is working.
