Progress bars on multi-step forms: what the research on motivation actually shows

A multi-step form (see our article on choosing between a single-step and a multi-step form) almost always shows, somewhere near the top, a progress indicator: a percentage, a bar that fills up, or a numbered list of steps. It has become such a common design reflex that we rarely stop to ask whether it actually does anything — and if it does, how to build it so it works. Two independent but complementary consumer psychology studies give a precise answer: how progress is displayed measurably changes how much effort a visitor is willing to invest in finishing a form.
Two studies that explain why a progress bar works
The first is by Ran Kivetz, Oleg Urminsky and Yuhuang Zheng, published in 2006 in the Journal of Marketing Research under the title "The Goal-Gradient Hypothesis Resurrected." By observing café customers enrolled in a loyalty program ("buy 10 coffees, get the 11th free") and internet users paid to rate songs on the way to a reward threshold, the authors show that effort — purchase frequency, rating speed — increases as the goal gets closer, and not linearly: the acceleration is sharpest in the final stretch. This is the goal-gradient effect: the more visible the finish line, the harder people push to reach it. A progress bar makes that finish line visible at every moment, whereas a form with no marker leaves the visitor guessing how much is left to do.
The second, more surprising, is by Joseph Nunes and Xavier Drèze, published the same year in the Journal of Consumer Research under the title "The Endowed Progress Effect: How Artificial Advancement Increases Effort." At a car wash, the researchers handed out two versions of a loyalty card: one required 8 stamped washes out of 8 boxes, the other required 10 washes out of 10 boxes — but with 2 boxes already stamped. Both groups therefore had to complete the exact same number of remaining washes. Result: 34% of customers with the "pre-filled" card redeemed their reward, versus 19% for the standard card. Giving the impression of a head start — even an artificial one — increases the probability of finishing. This is the endowed progress effect.
What this means in practice for a landing page form
Name the steps, don't just show a percentage
An abstract percentage ("33%") leaves the visitor guessing what's left; a list of named steps ("1. Your property · 2. Your contact details") makes the final goal concrete, which is precisely the mechanism Kivetz and his co-authors identify — the effect only appears when the goal is clearly perceived, not merely quantified. On a lead-generation quiz or a property valuation form, that means replacing "Step 2/3" with a label that says what the step is for: "Your contact details" rather than a bare number.
Give people a head start from the first step
The direct application of the endowed progress effect is to never start a bar at 0%. If the first step of the form only asks for information already known or already captured elsewhere on the page (a zip code picked up from the URL, an answer to an earlier quiz question), show it as already earned right away — the bar at 20-25% as soon as the visitor reaches the next step — rather than making them start from zero. This is a construction detail, not a deception: the information genuinely exists, it's simply credited visually earlier than it would be by default.
Never let the bar move backward
A "back" button that visually moves the progress bar backward cancels out the intended effect: Nunes and Drèze's research is specifically about the perception of advancement, not the actual advancement. A visitor who goes back to fix a field on step 1 should not see the bar drop back to 0% — it should stay at its highest reached level, even as the displayed step content changes.
Where to use one, where to skip it
A progress bar only makes sense when a form has at least two distinct steps with a clear final goal — a quote, a valuation, a signup. On a single-step form, there's simply nothing for it to indicate. And on a form with too many steps (beyond 4-5), the opposite effect kicks in: seeing how much is still left can discourage rather than motivate, in line with our article on the number of fields that maximizes conversion — it's better to group fields together than to multiply steps just to fill more segments on the bar.
- Use it for: quote requests, valuations, diagnostics, qualification quizzes — 2 to 4 steps with a tangible final goal.
- Skip it for: single-field forms (nothing to progress through), or forms already perceived as long — a bar there makes the remaining length more salient, not less.
- Edge case: simple contact forms don't need a bar; adding one would set an expectation of multiple steps that don't exist.

Pitfalls to avoid
- Artificially splitting into too many steps just to "have more segments to fill" — Kivetz's study shows it's the clarity of the final goal that drives motivation, not the number of boxes ticked.
- Showing a percentage inconsistent with the actual remaining effort (a very short step 1 shown at 10%, followed by a very long step 2 shown at 90%) — the gap between perception and reality becomes obvious the moment the visitor hits it, and it breaks the trust the bar itself was building.
- Resetting the bar after a validation error — a mis-filled field should never wipe out the progress already displayed.
- Stacking fake urgency on top of a progress bar (countdown timer, limited stock) — the two mechanisms visually cancel each other out and add cognitive load exactly where clarity is what actually works.
