Cognitive load: why a landing page that makes people think makes them leave

A visitor landing on your page doesn't bring unlimited attention: they bring a limited working memory, able to hold a few elements at a time, no more. Every option displayed, every animation, every column, every piece of jargon consumes a share of that mental budget. And the rule is unforgiving: whatever is spent on understanding the page is no longer available for deciding. A page that makes people think about its own organization — where to click, what to read first, what that word means — exhausts the visitor before they've even evaluated the offer. They don't think "this page is badly designed"; they think "this is complicated," close the tab, and attribute that impression to your product. The three types of cognitive load, without the jargon
Cognitive load theory was formalized by psychologist John Sweller in a foundational article published in 1988 in the journal Cognitive Science (Sweller, 1988). His finding, drawn from studying problem solving: human working memory is tightly limited, and the way information is presented determines the mental effort required to process it — the same content can be easy or exhausting depending on its form. The theory distinguishes three types of load, easily translated for a landing page:
- Intrinsic load: the real complexity of your offer. A B2B payroll platform is objectively harder to explain than a €19 ebook. This load can't be removed; it can only be chunked and paced.
- Extraneous load: the unnecessary complexity added by design and copy — competing options, confusing layout, jargon, decoration. It's pure waste, and it's what this article goes after.
- Germane load: the effort that genuinely helps the decision — comparing your offer to their situation, picturing themselves using it, resolving an objection. It's the only effort you want your visitor to spend.
The goal of a good landing page then fits in one sentence: drive extraneous load down to nearly zero, so that the visitor's entire mental budget goes to understanding the offer and making up their mind.
Where unnecessary load comes from on a landing page
Extraneous load is rarely the result of one big mistake: it's an accumulation of small mental taxes, often added with the best intentions. The most common sources:
- Too many options and competing CTAs. Two buttons of equal weight mean one more decision before the buying decision — the paradox of choice and the question of how many CTAs to use are two sides of the same problem.
- An open navigation. A full menu at the top of the page means five to eight possible exits to weigh on every screen — see should a landing page have a menu.
- Carousels and sliders. Moving content forces visitors to read against the clock and memorize what just disappeared — the carousel is almost always a bad idea.

This effect isn't just designer intuition. A study by Deng and Poole published in 2010 in MIS Quarterly (Deng & Poole, 2010) showed that a web page's visual complexity and its perceived order directly influence the visitor's emotional state — and, through it, their approach intentions (staying, exploring, returning) or avoidance intentions (leaving the page). In other words, a visually busy, disordered page doesn't just slow comprehension down: it creates a discomfort that pushes people to leave before they've even read the offer.
Lightening the page, section by section
Reducing extraneous load doesn't require redesigning everything: it requires deciding, screen by screen, what stays and what goes.
- One message per screen. Each section the page defends should hold a single idea: the hero promises, the next section proves, the next reassures. The first screen, above the fold, should carry only one promise and one action.
- A clear visual hierarchy. The visitor should know at a glance what matters: one dominant element per screen, consistent heading sizes, contrasts that guide instead of competing.
- One single primary action. One CTA repeated identically down the page, rather than several different actions fighting for the click.
- Remove before you add. Faced with an underperforming section, the reflex is to add an argument, a badge, an animation. Test the opposite first: every element must prove it helps the decision, otherwise it taxes it.
- Scannable copy. Headings that summarize the argument, bulleted lists, short sentences: a visitor who skims should grasp the reasoning without reading every word.
- Respected conventions. Logo top left, buttons that look like buttons, the price where people expect it: the visitor should never have to "learn" your page. Any structural originality is paid for in mental budget.
How to diagnose an overloaded page
The first tool is the five-second test: show your page for five seconds to someone who has never seen it, then ask them what you sell, for whom, and what action was offered. If they hesitate or get it wrong, extraneous load is eating most of the budget. Complement it by watching real sessions (heatmap or replay recordings): mouse back-and-forths, scrolls that reverse, hesitations between two buttons are the visible traces of a visitor thinking about the page instead of thinking about the offer. Finally, look at where visitors drop off: an exit rate that spikes at one specific section — often a crowded pricing table or an overlong form — points to the screen that exceeds the available mental budget.
The nuance: simplifying is not stripping down
Reducing cognitive load doesn't mean shortening at all costs. A genuinely complex offer — a technical SaaS, a long-cycle B2B service — carries a high intrinsic load that it would be dishonest to hide: the visitor needs all the information to decide. The answer isn't a dense page, it's a longer but linear page: the same content, broken into sections read in order, one idea at a time, never asking the visitor to process two things in parallel.
