Banner blindness: when your own block looks too much like an ad

There's a particularly frustrating category of blocks on a landing page: the ones you worked hardest on and nobody reads. A big colored panel at the top of the page, a neatly framed promo banner, a row of aligned badges, a benefits carousel scrolling by on its own. The message is often excellent. The problem isn't the message, it's the container: it looks like an ad, and web users have spent twenty-five years learning not to look at ads. This avoidance reflex has a name in the ergonomics literature — banner blindness — and it draws no distinction between a banner bought by an advertiser and your own sales argument dressed up as a banner.

The mechanism: the irony of the "attention-grabbing" element

The phenomenon was described as early as 1998 by Jan Panero Benway in a paper with a deliberately ironic title, "Banner Blindness: The Irony of Attention Grabbing on the World Wide Web", published in the proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society annual meeting. The setup is simple: participants are asked to find a piece of information on a site, while the link leading to it takes the form of a large, colored, visually distinct, banner-like element. Against every designer's intuition, participants miss it. Benway notably observes that banners placed higher up the page — and therefore further from the other content links — are missed more often than those placed lower down, and that participants barely look at them when clicking them isn't required to complete their task. So making an element salient, if it's salient in the manner of an ad, can make it less visible, not more. This is the practical limit of the Von Restorff effect: standing out works when the difference signals "important content", and fails when it signals "advertisement".

The most decisive factor, in fact, isn't the block itself — it's what the visitor is doing. An eye-tracking study by Marc Resnick and William Albert published in 2014 in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction tracked participants' gaze paths on e-commerce home pages, comparing free viewing with a goal-directed task, with banners placed either at the top of the page above the main menu or in the right-hand column. The authors report significant differences in visual attention by location and by task type, with banner blindness strongest for the right-hand column and for goal-directed tasks. The consequence for a landing page is immediate: a visitor arriving from an ad or a search is by definition on a goal-directed task — they want to know what the product does, what it costs, and how to get it. That is exactly the mental state in which avoidance of peripheral areas is strongest.

Self-inflicted blindness: your most "designed" blocks are the most filtered

Let's name the trap clearly: on a landing page there is no third-party advertising. All the content is yours. Banner blindness therefore protects you from nothing — it eats your own blocks, starting with the ones you "designed" the most, because those are the ones that unknowingly adopted the visual grammar of an ad: heavy frame, different background color, rounded corners, layout independent of the text column, larger type, sometimes an animation. The carousel is the textbook case: it combines the panel format, the high position, and automatic scrolling. Work by Moira Burke, Anthony Hornof, Erik Nilsen and Nicholas Gorman (2005), published in ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, further shows that animated banners are harder to remember than their static look-alikes, and that the mere presence of banners slows visual search while increasing perceived workload. A block that moves doesn't only cost you its own visibility: it makes the rest of the page more tiring to scan.

High-risk zones and formats

  • The top strip, above the actual content — this is the historic home of the ad banner; anything sitting there inherits the suspicion. An offer message placed there is structurally less read than the same message built into the hero headline.
  • The side column — the most avoided location on a goal-directed task. On mobile it ends up stacked at the bottom of the page anyway, where nobody scrolls.
  • Anything that scrolls or blinks automatically — carousels, animated counters, ticker bars. Movement not triggered by the user is the single most reliable marker of "advertisement".
  • Rows of generic badges — five logos lined up side by side read as decorative trim, not as information: see trust badges and secure payment.
  • Panels cut off from the reading flow — a block that shares neither the width, nor the background, nor the typography of the surrounding text flags itself as external to the argument; the visitor treats it accordingly.

What still gets seen: staying inside the reading flow

The flip side is encouraging: what escapes banner blindness is simply content. An argument written as a sentence, in the text column, at the width of the text, in the typography of the text, gets read. An F- or Z-shaped reading path is still a reading path: elements aligned with its main axis get scanned, those falling outside it get skipped. A call-to-action button is seen when it concludes an argument — it then reads as the logical next step after what was just read — and ignored when it floats in a standalone panel that could just as easily be selling something else. Same logic for social proof: a testimonial placed right next to the decision and written as a quote does its job, whereas the same testimonial turned into a colored card in a row of three colored cards becomes decoration.

Cookie banners and popups: ignored, then dismissed

Overlays suffer a double penalty. They are first filtered like any other intrusive format, then they trigger a learned reflex: find the close button and dismiss, without reading. That reflex is the real danger, because it is spatial as much as functional. A useful message placed in the same zone as a cookie banner — or just below it — is swept away by the dismissal gesture: the visitor clears the area, they don't sort through its contents. Same mechanics for exit-intent popups: the more a format is associated with an interruption, the more it is handled by a mental shortcut to close it, regardless of what it contains. The practical rule is harsh but simple: never entrust an argument your conversion depends on to a format the visitor has learned to make disappear.

Check empirically, not by designer's intuition

The person who designed the page is the worst placed to spot the problem: they know where every block is, so they see it. Two methods break that illusion. The most accessible is to install a heatmap and cross-reference click maps with scroll depth: a block sitting in an area people do scroll to but that receives no clicks is a serious blindness candidate. The second, more expensive and far more reliable, is task-based user testing — give five people a precise goal ("find out what the annual plan costs"), watch where they look, then ask them what they saw. One honest caveat about heatmaps, though: they don't measure attention. A click map shows where people clicked, a scroll map how far down they went, a mouse-movement map where the cursor travelled — and the cursor tracks the eye only very imperfectly. Only eye tracking measures actual gaze fixation, which is precisely why the studies cited above use it. A consumer heatmap therefore serves to form a hypothesis, not to prove one: the proof comes from changing the page and measuring conversion, or from watching users directly.
